Natural Insulation Thermo-Hemp Scoops Coveted UK Industry Award
Ireland's one-stop-shop for sustainable building systems, Ecological Building Systems is delighted to have been awarded Britain's premier sustainable building product award, in the GrandDesigns Magazine Award 2006 for 'Best Eco Product Design'.
The glittering awards ceremony took place last Friday June 2nd and was hosted by Kevin McCloud, presenter of Channel 4 series, GrandDesigns, and Claire Barrett, editor of GrandDesigns Magazine.
Five of 11 award categories were for product design and Ecological Building Systems and their Natural Insulation Thermo-Hemp - made from Hemp - faced stiff competition with over 1,000 entries received in total.
Ecological Building Systems, part of the MacCann & Byrne Group, is the brainchild of Tom Barbour, Managing Director and Richard MacCann & Ian MacCann, Directors. According to Tom Barbour, "We are delighted to receive this award as it recognizes the value and importance of innovation and development in the industry. We are particularly proud as we are the only Irish company to receive an award this year".
Announcing the winner of the 'Best Eco Product Design Award', McCloud was emphatic about his support of and interest in the sustainable building industry. Of all the product categories he presented, he took the time to single out and emphasise the importance of this category, referring to it as 'the one which was closest to his own heart', because of its vital importance, in how we build today, for a better and more sustainable future.
Barbour and Messers McCann developed the concept of Ecological Building Systems five years ago having spent time in Europe, searching out new and better ways to supply the sustainable building market, which at the time was very much in its infancy.
"Ecological Building Systems is about supporting and supplying the Irish market with both the technical know how and quality tried and tested premium sustainable product, to help interested parties build sustainably, properly." says Tom Barbour, Managing Director.
According to Barbour there has been a huge upsurge and interest in the concept of building sustainably this year especially with the price of fuel rising and the EPBD (Energy Performance in Buildings Directive), however he contends that there is not a lot of good product, information or technical know-how available on the ground in Ireland.
While delighted to win this industry award, Ecological Building Systems are getting used to receiving awards for many of their products. The company won 'Best Sustainable Product' for Thermo-Hemp at both the Sustainable Building Exhibition and Plan Expo in Dublin last year, while also scooping 'Best Overall Product' at Plan Expo also.
